How Many Dogs Can You Keep as per new Pet Rules in Chandigarh?

Gone are the days of keeping as many pets as you want. The new rules link the number of dogs you can have directly to the size of your house. This is probably the biggest change for many pet parents.

  • For a house up to 5 marla: You can keep 1 dog. (If different families live on separate floors, the maximum is 3 for the entire building).
  • For a 5 to 12 marla house: You are allowed 2 dogs.
  • For a 12 marla to 1 kanal house: You can have 3 dogs, and at least one of them must be an adopted Indian or mongrel dog.
  • For houses larger than 1 kanal: The limit is 4 dogs, with the condition that two are adopted Indies.

If you have more dogs than your home allows, you could face a fine and your unregistered pets might be taken away. So Pet registration is very Important. Register your Pet here

Where Can You Walk Your Dog? These Popular Spots Are Now Off-Limits.

Planning a walk with your furry friend? You’ll need to avoid some of the city’s most popular green spaces. The administration has prohibited dogs in areas like:

  • Sukhna Lake
  • The Rock Garden
  • Rose Garden
  • Leisure Valley
  • Bougainvillea Garden
  • Shanti Kunj
  • Chandigarh Botanical Garden

The key rule is to always keep your dog under control, making sure it doesn’t scare, annoy or harm anyone.

Feeding Street Dogs? Now There Are Specific Zones.

For all the kind-hearted people who feed community dogs, there’s a new system in place. You can now only feed them at designated spots chosen by the Municipal Corporation of chandigarh.

These feeding areas will be:

  • Away from places where children play.
  • Not near stairways or building entrances/exits.
  • Set up in quiet, low-traffic zones.

Feeding dogs outside of these approved areas is now an offence and can lead to a penalty.

You Must Clean Up After Your Pet. No Excuses.

This is a major rule for cleanliness: You must clean up after your dog. If your pet defecates in a public place like a park or street, it is your responsibility to scoop the waste into a poop bag and dispose of it properly. Failure to do this will result in a fine.

List of Banned Dog Breeds

The new bylaws completely ban the ownership of certain powerful dog breeds. These include:

  • American Pitbull Terrier
  • Rottweiler
  • Cane Corso
  • Dogo Argentino
  • American Bulldog
  • Bull Terrier
  • And any crossbreeds of these.

What Happens If You Break the Rules?

Violating these new pet bylaws can hit your wallet. Fines range from as low as ₹20 to as high as ₹13,400. If you keep breaking the rules, you could face an additional daily fine.

And if your dog is seized by the authorities, you’ll have to pay ₹250 per day as a maintenance charge to get them back.
